Headfirst into Luxury: Upholstered Headboards to Fall For

by Amitha Verma Interior Design, www.amithaverma.com

I’ve been experimenting with different kinds of headboards lately and one of the styles that works in almost any setting is an upholstered headboard. I love creating bedrooms that are serene, beautiful and calming, and a deep upholstered headboard really adds to the feeling of relaxation and luxury. Gold is a favorite color of mine these days – don’t you just love the simple gold headboard in this bedroom? It’s the perfect contrast to the geometric print wallpaper that dominates the room.

An oversize headboard, reaching towards the ceiling, can create a lot of drama even in a small bedroom. I adore the effect of the silk velvet headboard in this bedroom that simply oozes sumptuous elegance.

These neutral, uber-elegant palettes are my favorite. I find that the combination of pale gray, soft blue and white make for a really calm and serene interior. The combination of an upholstered headboard with a quilted wall is doubly luxurious!

Of course, headboards can be used to create contrast and drama too. The printed headboard in this bedroom brings a touch of color and print to an otherwise neutral scheme. The elaborate curves of the headboard have a real Rococo feel, which I love!

Here’s one last headboard that manages to combine most of my favorite elements: the color gold; a gorgeous, ornate frame; and a gorgeously regal print. Combined with those delicate side tables, and the effect of being framed by two tall windows, the look is utterly desirable… what a setting to come home to every night and rest your weary head!

Modern Interpretation of Past Treasures

by Amitha Verma Interior Design, www.amithaverma.com

When it comes to creating a gorgeous interior that melds the old with the new, it takes a special eye and ginger touch. Blending modern ideas with old pieces helps keep a design fresh and timeless. When designing you want to avoid seeing a room and knowing exactly when it was designed!

Century old pieces, keeping company with modern ones, such as in the New York apartment pictured here, prove traditional designs can be broken. Break the rules, rebel! I love the use of this bold, graphic fabric on one my favorite chairs, the classic Louis XVI chair. This great Neoclassic piece takes on a modern graphic stripe in a fantastic fashion. I love how this palette lends itself to a little bit of gilt work, which can be overly traditional with a different set of fabrics.

In the combined living/dining area, an Asian inspired black armoire with gold gilt accents keep watch over a sleek chaise lounge. Asian inspired pieces and motifs were very popular in France. Chinoiserie, a famous French fabric has Asian roots, but I’ll save that story for another post.

Another great Louis XVI chair is fashioned with a printed or embossed leather. I love the side table and it’s straight, ultra sleek chrome legs paired next to the animal inspired cabriole legs. And look at that “coffee table!” A piece of a corinthian column resting on that crisp dark flooring.

Love the modern lines contrasted with the beautiful curves of Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture. Great interpretation of past & present!
