Crazy for Color Series Part III: Fuchsia & Lavender

by Amitha Verma Interior Design, www.amithaverma.com

Even though a lot of the designs we produce are based around very sophisticated, neutral palettes, such as blues and greens, there are times when I like to let my hair down and really let loose with color. Last week I was working with one of my Houston interior design clients who is crazy for bright hues like fuchsia, burnt ochre, raspberry and lavender, and it got me thinking about some of my favorite jewel-toned combinations…

There is something just so delicious about combining vibrant hot pink tones with the cooler shades of lilac and lavender – the end result is unashamedly feminine, bold and full of personality.

It’s a combination I think could work in any setting, not just a bedroom. Of course, concentrated colors like these suit private spaces better, but set against a more neutral pale cream or sand, I think the fuchsia and lavender combo could work very well in a lounge or even dining room.

I like the idea of introducing print and texture into the mix too – as long as your base colors are essentially complementary, you can experiment with patterns and prints that go well together.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the project I just completed was looking for the perfect fabrics. I fell in love with these prints by Mulberry for Lee Jofa, which just show how a room can really be brought alive with the right kind of fabrics.

Crazy for Color Series, Part I: Deep blue and yellow

by Amitha Verma Interior Design, www.amithaverma.com

This year I’ve been finding a real shift in preferences, from subtle, neutral interior design schemes to color palettes that are much bolder and brighter. I think people are looking for some inspiration in their surroundings…

For me, it’s great – I get to experiment with some fabulous color combinations and prints! One of my favorites this season is a deep, rich blue, offset with yellow accents.

This combination works beautifully in every setting, whether bedroom, kitchen or drawing room. I love the concept of pale yellow sofas against deep blue wood paneling, or blue upholstery in a sunny yellow room with printed curtains and a rich yellow-gold carpet. The look is so versatile, it can look equally pretty in both casual and formal living spaces.

Whenever I take on a new interior design project, one of the first steps is usually selecting the fabrics I’m going to use. Lately I’ve been finding myself drawn to lots of colorful blue and yellow prints, especially the new designs by Oscar de la Renta for Lee Jofa. I am so excited by all these energetic brights, so colorful, yet still elegant!

People really respond well to bright, motivating color palettes in their homes, and I love how these fabrics translate into really uplifting interiors. Afraid of committing to a bold palette? Try using these fabrics on a bench or some throw pillows. Even a single piece upholstered in this kind of print looks gorgeously colorful!
