Summer Dreams…

With summer now in full swing, I find my mind sometimes wandering away from work, towards images of sandy beaches and brightly colored umbrellas against a sparkling sea…

This year I’m dreaming of a summer holiday on the French coast, but with my sons both still very young, we have to be careful about the kind of place we pick. It’s not as easy travelling with two little ones – a far cry from the carefree holidays we used to take before they were born- just pick up and go! But still, I think being able to spend time with the boys, playing on the beach and splashing in the water, would be the perfect family vacation!

I’ve always loved the south of France – the glamor of Monaco, the style and chic of Nice. But this year I think we’ll be looking for somewhere a little less high-octane and a little more family-friendly. I’ve been looking into a darling little place called Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the Cote d’Azur, about ten kilometers from Nice. Its name means ‘beautiful place on the sea’ – apparently named so because of the surrounding lush vegetation, year-round sun, and warm, shallow waters. Sounds just perfect for us!

What’s not to love- beach club for kids, and I hear they have floating trampolines in the water, which I’m sure the boys would love. As for me, I could spend the evenings strolling around the little French village and exploring some of the tiny boutiques.

Plus there would be lots of luxurious homes and gardens to get inspiration from – this is the French Riviera after all! Look at this lovely, classically designed hotel room against a palette of pale yellows & cream. This does not look like it is footsteps away from the ocean-luxurious! Now, I just have to convince dear hubby to travel halfway around the world to enjoy the perfect family vacation-ha!

Hand-Painted Charm

by Amitha Verma Interior Design, www.amithaverma.com

One of the projects we’ve been working is the interior design for a custom Mediterranean style new construction. We just finished designing the kitchen and we’re now working on the outside kitchen, loggia and pool water line. Now, I know I always talk about something being “one of my all time favorites” but I have to add another item to the list- hand painted tiles. Oh how I love the charm and elegance of a hand-painted tile. Nothing brings to life a backsplash or outdoor area like a hand-painted tile. I adore that each piece has it’s own character, color and imperfections, like little pieces of artwork. The slight nuances and differences in each piece adds to it’s charm and appeal.

This is the one we used in the Mediterranean Kitchen. I cannot wait until they come in! We had a luscious granite slab of cool greens and blues. The island was painted this pretty pale green and accented by dark green glazing. To contrast, we found this lovely hand painted tile with a pale yellow background, with cream and olive green highlights.

Here are a few options we’re playing with for the outdoor kitchen. We’re always attempting to blend modern and classic elements to give our homeowner a timeless look, and we’ve added some glass to the waterline to give it a modern touch. Which palette do you prefer? I’m so torn, I could easily live with both.

Here are a few others that I just fell in love with and will have to find a home for in our next new construction.

In the project below, we had a very pretty vestibule before the master bedroom entry just yearning for details. The flooring into this room were wood floors, and we thought this would be the perfect place for a gorgeous hand-painted tile!
