Summer Dreams…

With summer now in full swing, I find my mind sometimes wandering away from work, towards images of sandy beaches and brightly colored umbrellas against a sparkling sea…

This year I’m dreaming of a summer holiday on the French coast, but with my sons both still very young, we have to be careful about the kind of place we pick. It’s not as easy travelling with two little ones – a far cry from the carefree holidays we used to take before they were born- just pick up and go! But still, I think being able to spend time with the boys, playing on the beach and splashing in the water, would be the perfect family vacation!

I’ve always loved the south of France – the glamor of Monaco, the style and chic of Nice. But this year I think we’ll be looking for somewhere a little less high-octane and a little more family-friendly. I’ve been looking into a darling little place called Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the Cote d’Azur, about ten kilometers from Nice. Its name means ‘beautiful place on the sea’ – apparently named so because of the surrounding lush vegetation, year-round sun, and warm, shallow waters. Sounds just perfect for us!

What’s not to love- beach club for kids, and I hear they have floating trampolines in the water, which I’m sure the boys would love. As for me, I could spend the evenings strolling around the little French village and exploring some of the tiny boutiques.

Plus there would be lots of luxurious homes and gardens to get inspiration from – this is the French Riviera after all! Look at this lovely, classically designed hotel room against a palette of pale yellows & cream. This does not look like it is footsteps away from the ocean-luxurious! Now, I just have to convince dear hubby to travel halfway around the world to enjoy the perfect family vacation-ha!

Design Spotlight: The Tulip Motif

by Amitha Verma Interior Design, www.amithaverma.com

Whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, florals are something of a design staple. For me, a good floral fabric or print evokes a real feeling of elegance and vintage style. I’m always so inspired by motifs taken from nature. Recently I’ve found myself being drawn to some really lovely prints with tulip motifs made by famous English design houses like Colefax and Fowler, and William Morris.

The tulip has made its way into many ‘traditional’ English prints and you often see a tulip print in old English stately homes. There’s even a special Tulip Staircase in the Queen’s House in London!

Interestingly, tulips are not originally a very English symbol at all. The tulip was first used in interior design and architecture in Turkey, and it was the Ottomans who brought the motif to Europe. Of course, the Dutch were the ones to eventually commercialize the tulip in the 17th century, and Holland became known as the birthplace of the tulip. But as a design motif, tulips have proliferated across Europe, and now can be seen in upholstery, curtains, bedding and even wallpaper.

I love this modern tulip inspired velvet fabric, by Barbara Barry for Kravet. We recently used this fabric in one of our projects, for these two fabulous, extra long, cozy kidney pillows, and they turned out so luscious!

Historians say that the tulip motif came to the United States through Dutch descendants who settled in the Hudson River area and began producing tulip themed freehand paintings on large wall areas. This trend eventually became a fashion for wall stenciling, and we now see many modern homes with a feature wall covered in a delicate tulip vine stencil.

I’m loving the simplicity and the elegance of the wall shown above – the almost austere white sink and mirror are the perfect contrast to the elaborate stenciled design. Perhaps I need to think about a makeover for one of my powder rooms!
