There is something so decadent and personal about an actual dressing room as opposed to just a closet. Working in custom homes, one of the areas I spend a lot of time designing and detailing is custom dressing rooms and master closets. In a dressing room, especially a glamorous dressing room, such as those fit for royalty, you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the world and concentrate on just you. Time spent here is your time, to prepare for the day, groom to your heart’s content and enjoy your beautifully displayed wardrobe.
Of course, you probably won’t need as much space as the royal family in the illustration below! This is the grand Gatchinsky Palace, of Emporer Pavel, at the height of Russian classicism period. Having a space all your own, no matter how big, in just your style and taste is one of the high points of having a glamorous dressing room.

Can you imagine getting ready in such a dreamy room?? The carved paneling, the most gorgeous shades of blue, (one of my favorite colors), the antiquing, and those chairs! All dressing rooms should have plenty of seating for to allow for an inviting, plush experience. I always incorporate the use of wood panelling which adds that gracefulness and wonderful richness that regular closets just lack. Of course, our interpretations are a little more modernized and not so richly carved! This is a great place to add antique finishes and to use colors that inspire you.

When furnished with a beautiful chair and desk or table, you can also find quiet time away from the rest of the household to do your correspondence by email or by hand and go over your schedule. Add a bright lamp to illuminate your activities.

A large floor mirror is a must in any dressing room. The wider the better for getting a complete view of your look such as the one pictured here. This is a great opportunity to add a must have piece that you will love.

If you are fortunate enough to have the space, creating separate areas for different styles and types of clothing is perfect for optimal organization. If your current dressing area isn’t sufficient, think about converting an extra room into a dream dressing room all your own.

As beautiful as a dressing room can be, the most important function should be organization! Take inventory of your items and space plan accordingly. Most people don’t need nearly as much long hanging as short hanging. Lots of adjustable shelves are great for shoe storage. Vary drawer heights for shorter items that don’t need deep drawers. Cubbies are also great ways to store handbags and belts. Each closet is always as unique as the owner! Consider a built in like the lovely one above.
“I believe in manicures. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing alot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” -Audrey Hepburn
